Coventry tops Cumberland

CUMBERLAND — In her first varsity starter, Cumberland sophomore setter Katarina Cardoso had 15 assists, three aces and two digs, but the Clippers suffered a 26-24, 25-12, 25-17 Division I defeat to undefeated Coventry Thursday night at the Wellness Center.

“She did a good job. She made good decisions with the ball,” Cumberland coach Ruth Plante said of her setter, who was playing because AllStater Laurel Houle was sick. “We were right with them in the first game, but then we made mistakes and they played well.”

Cumberland (2-4 Division I) bounced back from the opening game by scoring the first six points of the second game. That’s when Coventry’s Alexis Baffoni (eight kills and four aces) went to the service line and ran off eight straight points to help Coventry go on a 25-6 run to end the game.

The Clippers, who also received four kills from outside hitter Gianna Santangelo, hosts reigning state champion North Kingstown Monday night. CRANSTON — Morgan Watson and Issa Miller each had 12 kills, while defensive specialist Liz Jerrier had four digs in Mount St. Charles’ 25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16 Division I road victory over Cranston West.

“We were down 9-2 in the first game and we just didn’t play consistent early in the match,” Mount coach Josh D’Abate said. “We cleaned things up and got better as the night went on. We can’t have moments of brilliance and then moments of nothing. We need consistency.”

Mount St. Charles (3-1 Division I) finishes up a busy week when struggling Prout makes the long trek to Woonsocket tonight at 6:30.

CENTRAL FALLS — Central Falls senior middle Ana DePina had nine kills and four blocks, while Beatriz Martins had six kills and three aces in the Warriors’ 25-13, 25-20, 20-25, 30-28 defeat to Chariho Thursday night.

“Our chemistry was so much better in the last two games,” CF coach Valerine Biascochea said. “They really fought to the end and played as a team.”

Central Falls (2-3 Division II) hosts undefeated Burrillville Tuesday night.
