WFRI benefit Oct. 24
PAWTUCKET – The Women’s Fund of Rhode Island (WFRI) will be hosting its final Cocktails and Conversations for 2018, entitled “Feminism in Popular Culture.” The event will be held on Oct. 24 at Red DWG Library, located at 413 Central Ave #300, Pawtucket, RI 02861. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m., with a panel discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Cocktails and Conversations features light bites, drinks, time to network and a panel featuring:
Lori Landay, Berklee College of Music Jess Brown, RISD, community activist and performer
Gloria Jean Masciarotte, RISD
The panel discussion will cover how feminism presents itself and can be deconstructed in music, film and virtual reality/artificial reality, WFRI Executive Director Kelly Nevins notes,
“It’s important to look at the media images we’re digesting through a gender lens because it shapes the way we see and think about women’s place in our world.”
Feminism and pop culture writer Andi Zeisler states, “Pop culture has become more diverse, more interesting and less stereotypical and more reflective of the real world that we live in. To make pop culture better we have to care about it, we have to talk about it. My hope is that people who are invested in pop culture, whether as creator or fans, will continue to try to make it overall fairer, better and smarter.”
Early bird ticket sales end Oct. 15, with tickets available for $15 each. Regular priced tickets are $20 after that date and will be available at the door. To purchase tickets, visit: https://bpt. me/3398917
