Child seat check Saturday at AAA East Providence

-

EAST PROVIDENCE – On National Seat Check Saturday, Sept. 29, parents and caregivers can ask questions and receive hands-on instruction from Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on how to choose, correctly install, and use car seats and booster seats.

Locally, AAA Northeast, Safe Kids RI and the Rhode Island State Police will stage a seat check Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at AAA East Providence, 12 River Road, Riverside, off Wampanoag Trail.

The event caps off Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from Sept. 23 to 29.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths among children. Correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent, but over half of car seats are misused or installed incorrectly,” said Diana Imondi, AAA’s traffic safety programs manager and certified child passenger safety instructor.

“We encourage all parents and caregivers to take advantage of Seat Check Saturday to ensure that they are using the right car seats for their children – and that they are using them the right way,” said Col. Ann C. Assumpico, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and director of the Department of Public Safety. “Car seats, booster seats and seatbelts are proven to save lives when used correctly. Let us show you how to keep your children safe.”

Certified child passenger safety technicians will also check child seats for recalls and offer this service at no charge.
