Northmen bounce back with home rout

-

NORTH SMITHFIELD — After suffering its first loss of the season Saturday against Cranston East, the North Smithfield boys soccer team didn’t panic and believed the loss simply came down to the Northmen’s inability to finish its chances.

That changed Thursday night against struggling West Warwick.

Four different Northmen found the back of the net and senior Michael deRonde scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute of a 4-0 Division II victory. a

“I still think we came out a - little flat, but the kids were hungry,” North Smithfield coach Eric Korytkowski said. “They were waiting to see the ball v go in the back of the net. Once F that happens, the confidence A goes up and everyone wants to score. We finished better today and we’re finishing from all over the field.”

North Smithfield (6-1 Division II) grabbed the only goal it would need 14 minutes into the game when leading scorer Justin Decelles rolled a ball to the far post where deRonde was on hand to clip the ball into the net.

The Northmen scored three goals in 13 minutes midway through the second half to blow the game open. Kyle Karspeck scored for the second straight game when he finished a chance from Michael Fernandes in the 52nd minute. Fernandes grabbed a goal five minutes later when he scored after a superb corner kick by Riley Crozier.

Jared Dube finished the scoring in the 65th minute with Jackson Laferriere earning the assist.

The Northmen are back in action Saturday night when they make the trip down to Westerly.
