Man under protective order charged in Connecticut stabbing

-

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A man under a protective order after an earlier domestic violence incident has been charged with the murder of his former partner.

Christopher Petteway, 42, was presented in court Friday after police said he followed through with a threat to kill Robert Parise on Thursday, stabbing the 63-year-old multiple times inside the home they once shared in New London.

Petteway had pleaded guilty in June to disorderly conduct and second-degree threatening and served 30 days in prison after a domestic violence incident at the home on June 19. The court had issued a protective order that initially prohibited Petteway from living with Parise.

The Day of New London reports that a victims’ advocacy organization, Safe Futures, had found Parise to be at high risk because Petteway had threatened to kill him.

“Our system has to take domestic violence seriously,” Katherine Verano, Safe Future’s executive director, told the newspaper.

Police said Petteway used a key to get into the home Thursday and stabbed Parise multiple times in the legs and torso. He told officer to shoot him, admitted he had stabbed Parise and told arresting officers, “I hope he dies” and “I got him as many times as I could,” according to court documents.

Court documents show that in Auguest Petteway had requested and was granted a modification of his protective order, which required him only to surrender or transfer firearms and ammunition and not to “assault, threaten, abuse, harass, follow, interfere with or stalk” Parise.

Petteway did not comment when he was presented in court on Friday on charges of murder and violating that order. He is being held on a $2 million bond and is due back in court on Oct. 24.

Parise’s home is near the courthouse, and he was found on the in the building’s driveway after the stabbing. Some of the judicial marshals who had performed first aid on him, were also on duty Friday for Petteway’s court appearance, the Day reported.
