November 13

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1956 Don Coelho’s 50-yard return of a last-quarter pass inter

ception to the one-yard line set up the winning touchdown as Pawtucket Vocational broke a 16-game losing streak dating back to November 22, 1954 by edging North Providence 13-7 at McCoy Stadium. A two-yard toss from QB Art Charbonneau to Joe Wilson, a steady ground-gainer all year, provided the Vokes’ margin of victory, while Coelho tallied the first TD on a three-yard buck. Armand LaMontagne, linemen Bob Ashby and Bob Barber, Coelho and Charbonneau all came in for high praise from coach Tom Farrell.

1966 Because Glenn McCusker proved to be a superior mudder

in the sloppy going at McCoy Stadium, Cumberland will battle Central for undisputed possession of the Class B lead – and possibly the championship after shutting out Saint Raphael Academy 18-0 before less than 2,000 spectators. McCusker, a 6-foot, 210-pound fullback, gained 163 yards rushing in 28 carries including all three touchdowns on a one-yard plunge, a three-yard run and a 26-yard interception return. The “wedge” blocking of center Paul Sweetman, guards Bob Grigelvich and Bob Ray and tackles Frank Bertozzi and Bruce Gorst provided McCusker gaping holes to run through all game long.

1976 Wayne Pelland at fullback and John Monaghan at mid

field were first-team All-Division soccer choices and two of the reasons why Cumberland compiled a 15-1-2 record this year. Tolman’s Luis Cano (forward) and Pawtucket West’s John Ribeiro (midfield) also made the first-team. The Clippers had three second-team selections in Paul Borges (midfield), John Martins (forward) and Jorje Botta (forward), while Tolman had two chosen in John Monteiro (fullback) and Tony Cabral (midfield). The lone Davies player to make the squad was Joe Nobrega (midfield).
