1966 Cumberland’s Rick McLaughlin, R.I. state champion,

finished 10th (only 9.3 seconds behind the winner) in the New England Cross Country Championships held in Durham, N. H. and run on a 2.5-mile course consisting of 1.4 miles of macadam, a surface that harriers are not allowed to compete on in Rhode Island. In addition to being more than half macadam, the course, one of the poorest ever laid out for a regional race, was replete with mud puddles and slippery spots with wet leaves. McLaughlin was the first Rhody runner to finish with Bobby Doyle of Hope in 17th and Fred Gashen of Cumberland placing 46th.

1986 Senior fullback Rob Davenport rushed for 189 yards on 30

carries, including three touchdowns, as Lincoln romped to a 35-14 victory over West Warwick in a Class B-1 contest. Davenport, who needed 90 yards to reach the 1,000 mark, tallied on runs of two, six and 11 yards, while John Picozzi dashed seven yards and Phil Dupras caught a nine-yard aerial from QB Pete Dalpe to account for coach Howie Catley’s Lions’ touchdowns. “This was probably the best game I’ve had,” Davenport said modestly after the game. “The holes were wide open. Anybody could have run through them.”
