PROVIDENCE – Thanks in part to a trio of sophomores, Cumberland High collected a satisfying 62.33-46.66 Headley Division triumph over Portsmouth at the Providence Career & Technical Academy oval on Friday night.

Unfortunately, they weren’t enough to avoid a tough 57-48 defeat to West Warwick.

Nicolette Ducharme provided the Clippers with a pair of victories in the shot put (330 ¾) and 20-pound weight throw (37-3 ¼), while classmate Brynn Eckmann managed a win in the 300 meters (46.61) and second in the 55 dash (8.15, though senior Ali Leboeuf took third just .02 behind).

Fellow 10th-grader Olivia Belt reigned in the 3,000 (11:13.26), and senior Allison Raposo garnered the 1,000 in 3:20.91.

In another Headley clash, Lincoln High suffered a pair of losses to La Salle (87-17) and Toll Gate (60-35), but sophomore Hayley Chartier led a 1-2-3 sweep of the shot put with a premier heave of 31-6 ¼, while junior Jackie Andrews took second (30-2) and senior Audrey Ogni third (26-5 ¼).

Andrews nailed down the 20-pound weight toss with a distance off 44-0, nearly three feet from her closest competitor.

In a true battle for supremacy in the Sullivan Division, Mount St. Charles outdueled crosstown rival Woonsocket, 61-43, while also crushing Mount Pleasant, 84-16.

Ironically, the Villa Novans captured the top spot in seven of the 13 events but yielded the final verdict to the Mounties’ depth.

Highlights for MSC included two relay triumphs, freshman Anna Giacobbe’s win in the 300 meters (45.67) and second in the 55 hurdles; and other victories by senior Eileen Whalen in the 600 (1:50.72); sophomore Isabelle Deslaurniers in the 3,000 (14:22.18); and junior Sasha Mundy in the 1,000 (3:55.62).

Still, Woonsocket seniors Alissiana Folco and Marissa Henley did everything in their power to claim a win for the Villa Novans. Folco snagged three individual events, among them the 55 dash (7.67), 55 hurdles (8.91) and long jump (15-11 ¾), while Henley reigned in the shot put (29-3 ½) and 20-pound weight throw (41-9 ¾).

WHS sophomore Nicole Dioh took the 1,500 (5:49.26), while frosh Jahzarah Alexis won the high jump (4-8) and placed second in the 300.

PROVIDENCE – Behind several outstanding performances from its underclassmen, North Smithfield swept a trio of Dwyer Division victories over Ponaganset (67-35), Central Falls 53-43) and Mount Hope (5440) at the Providence Career & Technical Academy fieldhouse on Thursday night.

The freshman duet of Katarina Brandao and Victoria Robertson sparked the Northmen from the get-go after placing first and second in the 3,000 meters with respective times of 13:39.63 and 14:34.75.

Senior Rita Marcotte followed that up with a triumph in the 1,500 (5:49.81), while another ninth-grader, Sadie Crozier, took the 600 in 1:58.29.

Fellow frosh Jackie deRonde helped out with more critical points with a second in the high jump (4-4), thirds in the 55 hurdles and 55 dash and a fourth in the 300.

Junior Racheal Shaw helped out with a win in the shot put (26-0) and a runner-up in the 20-pound weight throw.

As for Central Falls, junior Sara DaVeiga captured the 300 (48.97) and 55 dash (8.13) while gaining third in the long jump. Senior Dulcinea Burgo chipped in a pair of seconds in the 55 hurdles and long jump.

In another Dwyer showdown, Tolman managed a 43-14 victory over archrival Shea, but dropped respective decisions to Central (70-18) and Juanita Sanchez (6715).

Still, junior Abbie Jammeh won the shot put (25-8 ½) and took third in the 20-pound weight toss (29-3 ½.

In Bayha Division action, St. Raphael Academy split its dual meets, edging Westerly, 55-53, in a thriller but fading in a 5950 loss to Rogers.
