North Smithfield police charge man with series of vehicle break-ins
NORTH SMITHFIELD – A 35-year-old man was ordered held at the state prison as a probation violator Friday after local police arrested him on multiple counts of larceny and breaking into cars.
Thomas Fisher was on probation after being convicted on charges of larceny, receiving stolen goods and obstructing, lodged against him by police in Cranston last August. He also faces similar charges from the Woonsocket Police Department which have been pending against him since November.
On Wednesday, Capt. Stephen Riccitelli said, police received a call at about 4 p.m. from a resident who said he’d just seen a man walking on Eddie Dowling Highway who matched the description of someone who had broken into the caller’s vehicle on Old Smithfield Road. The caller had obtained video of the culprit entering the vehicle and turned it over to the police.
Investigators later tracked Fisher down and matched him to the individual in the video through his tattoos, according to Riccitelli.
Also, police obtained a warrant to search a location which Fisher was staying and located several items that were reported stolen from numerous vehicles in town, the captain said.
Fisher was brought into Sixth District Court for a preliminary appearance on five counts each of tampering with an auto and larceny on Friday. He also admitted to a separate charge of being a probation violator and the judge subsequently ordered a warrant for his committal at the Adult Correctional Institutions, according to the judiciary’s web site.
