Bans, Shea overcome Chariho

Chargers do everything to slow down All-Stater

Everywhere Erickson Bans turned on Friday night, he saw green.

Not in the color of money, mind you, but the color of the jerseys donned by the Chariho Regional boys’ basketball team.

No matter what the defensive call was by the Chargers, Bans was able to handle the challenge. The Shea High junior was able to split double teams and perform his usual feats in transition, scoring 37 points as the Raiders held on for a 73-63 win in Division II action at The Cage.

It was clear the Chargers (13, D-II) wanted to get the ball out of Bans’ hands as much as possible. It was also clear the Raiders (2-2, D-II) were ready. They did a good job in setting screens that enabled Bans to function at a very high level. He went 11-of-11 at the foul line and scored 24 points after halftime.

“Erickson is an outstanding dribbler. His head is always up and he finds the open man,” said Shea head coach Steve DeMeo. “Plus, he knows how to take the ball to the rack. He’s our go-to guy.”

Shea received contributions from DeJuan Hayes (nine points, two 3-pointers), Trentin Curry (nine points), Josiah Diaz (eight points), and Marquis Gomes (eight points). DeMeo is optimistic that someone from that group will emerge as a dependable Robin to Bans’ Batman. Right now, the Raiders lack a clear No. 2 option to take some of the scoring heat off Bans.

Defensively, the Raiders forced the Chargers in to 28 turnovers behind a 1-2-2 full-court trapping scheme. Chariho also missed 10-of-20 shots at the foul line but were very much in the thick of it after Luke Fasaro (11 points) soared in for a layup that made it 65-61 with just over a minute remaining.

At one point in the first half, Shea was up 20 (33-13) and appeared to be in business. The lead was cut to 13 points at halftime before Chariho started to get something going down low. What was a 61-49 deficit with under four minutes remaining had been cut to a manageable four points with still plenty of time remaining.

The Raiders were able to ice the game behind two free throws apiece from Hayes and Curry while Bans went 4-for-4. As a team, Shea went 19-of-24 at the stripe.

A three-game week awaits the Raiders with two of the contests taking place on the road. They’re at Middletown on Monday, home to Narragansett on Wednesday, and at Juanita Sanchez on Friday. PROVIDENCE — The Lincoln boys basketball team saw a double-digit lead evaporate in the second half of Friday’s Division III road contest against St. Patrick.

The undefeated Lions turned to a full-court press in the final few minutes, which led to baskets for junior point guard Josh Jahnz, Tyler McNulty and Declen Quinn, as Lincoln returned home with a 62-56 victory.

“I hate the way we played,” said Lincoln coach Kent Crooks, who had to tape the soles of his shoes because they broke apart in the second half. “We were up double digits numerous times and we didn’t exhibit a killer instinct. When you get up on somebody, you have to be judicious with your shots and you need to play good defense. There’s no excuses for it.”

Lincoln (6-1, 3-0 Division III) looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory at UCAP, as the Lions built a 37-25 lead at halftime. Jahnz, who scored a teamhigh 18 points, and Cody Anter, who drilled three 3-pointers and scored 15 points, paced the Lions.

St. Patrick used the inside-outside performances of Isaac Parkes and Keith Wilson to get back into the game. Parkes scored a game-high 22 points thanks to his work in the paint, while Keith Wilson knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 17 points.

Lincoln will put its un- defeated mark on the line Tuesday night with a trip to talented Mt. Hope in Bristol Tuesday night. That contest is followed by a date with Scituate Wednesday.
