Saints overcome Panthers

JOHNSTON – After back-to-back losses that saw them average just 36 points, the St. Raphael Academy girls’ basketball team got back on track Thursday night, posting a 56-48 win over Johnston.

SRA sophomore Amaya Dowdy paced the victors with 18 points while classmate Elizabeth Bruno pumped in 13 points that was fueled by a 9-for-9 showing at the free-throw line. Kaylee Mulligan added nine points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Saints (4-2, Division I-C) while Paige O’Brien drained two 3-pointers for eight points and also pulled down six rebounds. Malyse Vieira fueled the Saints’ defense with four steals.

SRA’s next game is Monday at East Greenwich.

LARA, LIONS ROLL

LINCOLN — Lincoln junior wing Yaritza Lara hit three 3-pointers and scored a gamehigh 22 points and guard Kate Swanson chipped in with 14 to lead the Lincoln girls basketball team to a 65-22 Division III victory over Times2 STEM Academy Thursday night.

Lincoln (3-5, 2-2 Division III) built a 31-point advantage at halftime to snap a twogame losing streak. Victoria Ryan, Alexis Claudio and Lynsey Fleming also pitched in offensivel­y for the Lions, who are back in action tomorrow afternoon in Providence against St. Patrick’s.

Times2’s Samyra Pina essentiall­y carried the visitors on her own, scoring 22 of their 22 points. Adrianna Jones added the other bucket.

CLIPPERS LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland girls basketball team made just six of 19 free throws and turned the ball over far too many times in a 47-39 Division II home defeat to Classical Thursday night.

Cumberland (1-4 Division II) received a team-high 15 points and 3-pointers from leading scorer Casey Farrell, while sophomore Madison Zancan added 10 points. The Clippers host Cranston East Monday night.

Classical was 6-for-18 from the foul line, but Anitz Hazziez (11 points), Layne Silvia (10 points) and the Purple built a seven-point advantage at halftime and never relinquish­ed the lead.
