Dutcher wins in Cape Cod
SANDWICH, Mass. — Woonsocket 120-pounder Jordan Dutcher bounced back from a defeat last week to claim the Cape Cod Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Villa Novans only brought seven wrestlers to Sandwich High, but four reaching their respective title bout and five reaching the podium.
Dutcher, who lost in the Daniel Gionet title match last week, was never tested by a trio of Massachusetts wrestlers. The Villa Novan posted pins in 15 seconds and 1:16 to reach the final, where he defeated Sandwich’s Connor Keegan 16-0 to move a win closer to becoming the third wrestler in school history to reach 100 victories.
Woonsocket’s other three finalists weren’t so lucky. Anthony Diaz posted a pin and a 5-0 victory to reach the 106-pound final where he was majored by Tri-County’s (Franklin) Harley Davidson Blanchette, 11-0. The Massachusetts wrestler dominated the match on top, recording two sets of back points in the second period and anoth- er set of back points in the final period.
Tomas Murphy pinned his first two opponents to advance to the 113-pound final, but Silver Lake’s Dan Walsh finish off a dominant day with a 17-0 victory in just five minutes.
Caleb Lambert, who was the No. 1 seed at 160 pounds, ground out a pair of eight-point victories to reach the title bout against Barnstable’s Joseph Molina. Lambert suffered the same fate as Molina’s first two opponents, as the Novan was pinned in just 1:12.
Daniel Castillo was downed in his first match at 132 pounds, but he bounced back with four straight victories to finish third. Castillo posted a pin in his first consolation bout before recording three straight decisions (6-0, 2-1 and 5-0).
The undefeated Villa Novans return to Division II action Tuesday night at Exeter-West Greenwich. The Novans are home again Thursday against Blackstone Valley rivals Lincoln and Smithfield.
