Carpentier, Cahill lead Novans to road win at CF

CENTRAL FALLS — Woonsocket sophomore Tiana Carpentier hit a 3-pointer with just under four minutes left in Tuesday night’s Division III clash with Central Falls to help the Novans pull away from the young Warriors, 29-22.

“It was a very close game with just a few minutes to go,” Woonsocket coach Mike Cahill said. “They hit their free throws and played well. We didn’t have our free throws, but we made enough shots to win the game.”

Woonsocket (2-6 Division III) received a game-high 12 points from sophomore wing Peyton Cahill, while Carpentier produced four points and eight rebounds. The Novans are back in action tonight at 6 o’clock against visiting St. Patrick.

Central Falls (2-7 Division III) was only down 12-9 at halftime thanks to the play of its improving freshmen. Ameliz Villegas led the Warriors with nine points, while Fata Diallo and Caroline Gill each added five points. The Warriors will attempt to snap a five-game losing streak tomorrow night in Lincoln against Davies Tech.

CUMBERLAND — For 11 minutes, the Cumberland girls basketball team’s strategy of packing the paint and daring undefeated Westerly to beat the Clippers worked.

And then Lauren Dobson made an outside shot and then she made another shot. After being down by just two points with five minutes left in the half, the Clippers allowed the Bulldogs to score the final 19 points of the first half, as the Bulldogs left the Wellness Center with a 63-37 Division II victory Tuesday night.

“Early in the game we rebounded well and packed in a tight zone, daring their guards to shoot because their strength was inside,” Cumberland coach George Coderre said. “Once Dobson hit a jumper, everything changed.”

Cumberland (2-6 Division II) struggled from the line (5-for-16) to hurt its cause. Sophomore Madison Zancan led the team with 13 points and two 3-pointers, but the wing was just 1-for-8 from the line. Senior guard Casey Farrell chipped in with 10.

Westerly (8-0 Division II) received a game-high 24 points and four 3-pointers from Dobson, while Delaware-bound forward Megan Albamonti had 20 points.

Cumberland travels to Exeter-West Greenwich tomorrow night.
