Cumberland’s Sara DeSousa scores a hat trick in playoff win

WOONSOCKET – The No. 3 Mount St. Charles/Cumberland/Lincoln School co-op hockey team doesn’t have the depth of No. 6 Warwick co-op, but the Titans don’t have the Mounties’ top end talent.

And that was the difference in Friday night’s opening game of the Division I quarterfinal series.

The Titans were up to the challenge in the opening period and created plenty of oddman rushes to worry Lincoln School goalie Amelia Lambert, but then Mount’s Katielyn Mastroianni and Cumberland’s Sara DeSousa took control of the game.

Mastroianni delivered an assist on the game-winning goal at the end of the first period and the Clipper freshman unloaded two rockets that goalie Rebecca Yaseen couldn’t stop in the second period to finish off a hat trick in a 4-2 victory at Adelard Arena.

“I thought it was a battle and I knew they were going to battle us because we played two one-goal games during the season,” MCL coach Tony DiLorenzo said. “They have two nice players and a couple of other complimentary players. We did a good job of taking away the middle of the ice later in the game, but then we let our emotions get the best of us at the end.”

n y The No. 3 Mounties can obook a date with No. 2 East Bay in the semifinals with ea victory over the Titans tonight at Thayer Arena at 6. The key, according to nDiLorenzo, is for his players nto handle Warwick’s physical -and mental pressure better ethan they did Friday night. lMount’s best players spent ,time in the penalty box, which -can’t happen with a team that skates just two lines.

- “I just want to remind the ogirls about sportsmanship and the whole nine yards, that’s their way to play the game,” DiLorenzo said. “On that field, they won this game. We ,just need to play with comeposure and play the way we dknow we can play.” s Warwick’s biggest issue aall evening was identifying swhere DeSousa was in the doffensive zone. It took the tlefty just 41 seconds to take a pass from Dalpe and score gfrom close range past goalie uRebecca Yaseen (30 saves). The Titans answered later in the period on an Olivia Monte sgoal, but the Titans commityted a penalty moments later. y The Mounties took the rlead for good on the powoer-play as Mastroianni and tCumberland’s Elise Curren mset up Mount senior Maddie

- Cataldo for the go-ahead goal.

“I thought those two girls, Maddie and Elise made definitely came up big,” DiLorenzo said. “They’ve got some depth and that will win you games if you coach. I’m not upset about the 4-2 and that the game got sloppy at times. I just don’t like the emotions being lost. There’s no need for it.”

The second period was all about Mastroianni and DeSousa. First, Mastroianni found DeSousa in the left circle for a beautiful wrist shot over the left shoulder of Yaseen at 7:37 to stretch the lead out to two.

Mastroianni nearly had a goal of her own when she barreled into the Titan crease with two minutes left in the second period, but the puck rebounded out to the right circle where DeSousa unloaded a slap shot for her hat trick.

Warwick answered with a four-on-four goal 1:26 into the second when Cardi ripped a shot from between the circles past Lincoln School’s Amelia Lambert. Lambert, however, made a massive stop with three minutes to go when she robbed KayLee O’Connor on a point-blank opportunity. Warwick 1 01 -2

BRONCOS ROLL

BURRILLVILLE — The No. 4 Burrillville/Ponagan- set/Bay View co-op hockey team is playing its best hockey at the right time.

The Broncos received goals from seven different players, including a pair from Burrillville senior Alix Etheridge, to defeat No. 5 Cranston/East Greenwich co-op 8-0 Friday night at Levy Rink in Game 1 of a Division I quarterfinal series.

“We just played really well as a team,” BPBV coach Cortney Lacye said. “We were missing a defenseman tonight, so we had a couple of girls playing different positions and they played great. This group is really coming together in the locker room and on the ice.”

BPBV, which will look to finish off the series sweep tonight at Cranston Ice Rink at 6:10, scored the only goal it would need 3:10 into the game when Ponaganset freshman Kristen Briggs netted a goal. The Broncos scored five times in the opening period to take control of the contest.

Bay View’s Diana Poland finished the evening with three assists, while Ponaganset freshman Isabella Besser had a goal and two assists. Burrillville senior goalie Emily Etheridge made six saves in the shutout.
