Clippers bounced

PROVIDENCE — Everything was going No. 11 Cumberland’s way early in the first half of Friday night’s Division II preliminar­y-round contest with No. 6 Juanita Sanchez.

Casey Farrell and Emily Lambrou each knocked down a couple of 3-pointers to put the Clippers up by 16 points. The Cavaliers, however, cut the deficit to just nine at halftime and then Aniya Wilson took over in the second half. The guard scored 15 of her game-high 22 points over the final 16 minutes to lift the Cavs to a 59-51 victory.

“They started putting some pressure on us and it all fell apart,” Cumberland coach George Coderre said. “They started picking our zone apart, while we were turning the ball over in the press to help their transition game. In the second half, they just got hit and Wilson did whatever she wanted.”

The Clippers received a team-high 16 points from talented sophomore Madison Zancan, but she only made six of her 16 free throws. As a team, Cumberland was an unimpressi­ve 14-for-34 from the foul line. Farrell finished 11 points in her final game as a Clipper.
