1953 Len Nannarone, 18-year-old Providence College soph

omore, captured the R. I. caddy championsh­ip posting rounds of 73 and 75 over the par 69 Pawtucket Golf Club layout in the annual tourney for bag-toters. Nannarone was eight strokes better than Rogers’ Lawrence Mowry. In team play, the Wannamoise­tt crew of Nannarone, Frank Cute, Norm Anderson and Jim Heatherton dominated and won the big silver cup for the fourth consecutiv­e year.

The backfield has Butch Mendes at quarterbac­k, either Armando Rao or Dick Flynn at running back, Bob Savastano at flanker back and Pete Brodeur at fullback.

1973 Despite a late bid by 12-year-old Susan Santucci of

Cumberland, Marianne Tracy of East Providence captured the R. I. Women’s Golf Associatio­n junior girls’ championsh­ip, 3-and-2. Tracy, a 16-year-old junior at Bayview Academy, and Santucci, a pupil at the North Cumberland Middle School, were all even after 10 holes at the Metacomet Country Club. However, Tracy, who plays at Wannamoise­tt, closed out Santucci, of Winnesuket at the 16th hole with a string of some fine chip shots.
