1953 Len Nannarone, 18-year-old Providence College soph
omore, captured the R. I. caddy championship posting rounds of 73 and 75 over the par 69 Pawtucket Golf Club layout in the annual tourney for bag-toters. Nannarone was eight strokes better than Rogers’ Lawrence Mowry. In team play, the Wannamoisett crew of Nannarone, Frank Cute, Norm Anderson and Jim Heatherton dominated and won the big silver cup for the fourth consecutive year.
1963 Veteran coach Win Dodge’s Pawtucket West grid team
will meet Tolman in the annual Injury Fund benefit game. The Rangers’ offensive wall will start Fred Short and Brian Solotke at the ends, Mike Labonte and either Charlie Thibeault or Clayton Field at the tackles, Tom Carlson and Leo Archambault at the guards and Mike Lightbown at center. The backfield has Butch Mendes at quarterback, either Armando Rao or Dick Flynn at running back, Bob Savastano at flanker back and Pete Brodeur at fullback.
1973 Despite a late bid by 12-year-old Susan Santucci of
Cumberland, Marianne Tracy of East Providence captured the R. I. Women’s Golf Association junior girls’ championship, 3-and-2. Tracy, a 16-year-old junior at Bayview Academy, and Santucci, a pupil at the North Cumberland Middle School, were all even after 10 holes at the Metacomet Country Club. However, Tracy, who plays at Wannamoisett, closed out Santucci, of Winnesuket at the 16th hole with a string of some fine chip shots.
