1953 Lloyd Farrands of Pawtucket caught a 50-pound, 43

inch from head to tail, striped bass off Newport last week, the biggest catch in his 16 years of salt water fishing. “I really knew I had something, when it hit. It took me nearly an hour to land him, and the reel emptied three times before I pulled him in,” said Farrands who used a specially made twin hook and a 65-pound catgut leader. Sailors lined the rails of a near-by U. S. Navy destroyer and watched him land the striper.

1963 Ron Whitney put together strings of 168, 235 and 219

for a high three of 622 to lead all keglers in the Blackstone Valley Industrial Tenpin Bowling League. Other leaders were Chuck Cotton 203-595, Dan Spink 571, Red Nadeau 564, Hub Palardy 555, Walt Hudzynski Jr. 551, Ed Caouette 535, Bill Banach 533, Ernie Masse 531, Walt Wright 529, Walt Hudzynski Sr. 529, Jerry Yankee 525, Ed Mercier 524, Ray Checchini 523, Armand Lambert 519, Ron Griffin 515 and Gino Bandieri 510.

1973 Paul Kazarian blocked and recovered a bad punt at

the opposition‘s 12-yard line to set up the game’s only touchdown as Tolman blanked Saint Raphael Academy 8-0 in an Injury Fund exhibition tilt. New QB Gary Alix scored on an eight-yard rollout and connected with end Bernie Smith on a deflected pass for the extra points. In other Fund action, Cumberland’s Charlie Walach recovered a fumble and Woonsocket’s Harry Nelson notched an interception as the Clippers and Villa Novans, as a preview to their annual Turkey Day affair, played to a scoreless deadlock.
