-

PAWTUCKET — The Woonsocket girls tennis team took advantage of shorthanded Valley foe Tolman, 7-0, in a Division III contest Thursday afternoon at Slater Park.

Woonsocket (5-5 Division III) received straight-set victories from singles players Tianna Carpentier, Rushie Vilane, Claudine Wehbe and Sainab Jackson. The Novans return to the Aylsworth Tennis Courts Tuesday against Central.

Tolman (2-9 Division III) was without No. 1 singles standout Victoria Chmielinski, which pushed everyone up a spot in the ladder. The Tigers won just one set, as the No. 1 doubles team of Mia Davila and Charlize Lopez won the first set of their three-set defeat to Rachine Iv and Emily Flannery.

The Division III qualifying tournament starts Friday at Slater Park and Shea junior Sophia Panzo, who is undefeated, is the No. 3 seed. Panzo is looking to reach the state tournament for the third straight year. Pilgrim’s Jenna Gustafson is the No. 1 seed and Pilgrim’s Mark-Chaterina Fornaro is seeded second.

DEPTH SAVES MOUNTIES

PROVIDENCE — The Mount St. Charles girls tennis team’s depth proved to be more valuable than Moses Brown’s top-end talent. While the Quakers dominated the top two singles matches, the Mounties flexed their depth in the back-end singles and doubles matches.

Mount St. Charles used singles wins from Piper O’Connell and Emily Graham, along with doubles wins from the teams of Isabella Chiodo and Shivani Gopal and Tira Albergo-McGovern and Isabella Sughrue to earn a 4-3 Division I road win over the Quakers Thursday.

Mount St. Charles (5-4 Division I) will spend the weekend trying to qualify for the individual state tournament. The Mounties return to league action Tuesday against Smithfield.
