Mount St. Charles bounces back with sweep of Titans

WARWICK — Mount St. Charles senior No. 1 singles player Ally Romano is certainly getting in plenty of practice for this weekend’s individual state tournament. One day after going three sets to beat Cumberland’s Amiah Sommer, the senior overcame Toll Gate’s Sabrina Dergel, 62-, 4-6, 7-5, in the Mounties’ 7-0 Division I victory over the Titans.

Mount St. Charles (7-5 Division I) rebounded from Tuesday’s defeat to the Clippers with straight-set victories in six of the seven matches. Alex Wyatt, Piper O’Connell and Emily Graham all played well in singles matches.

The No. 1 doubles team of MaryKate Tillinghas­t and Tanvi Bhatia dropped just three games in their rout. The Mounties finish the regular season Thursday agianst Cranston West, but weather might the match.

PAWTUCKET — The No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Mateo and Sophia Anderson posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory to clinch the Shea girls tennis team a 4-3 Division III victory over Johnston Wednesday afternoon at the Tom Duffy Courts.

Shea (5-7 Division III) looked like it was going to cruise to a comfortabl­e victory when all four singles players won their second sets. Junior Sophia Panzo, who will participat­e in the state tournament Friday at Slater Park, No. 2 singles player Brianna Andrade and No. 3 singles player Ami Avila Sosa all won their matches.

Julianna Ferruccio bounced back from the second-set defeat to Eve Chapman to post a tiebreaker victory. The Raiders host one-loss Tiverton Thursday.

TOLMAN SWEEPS PCD

PAWTUCKET — The Tolman girls tennis team ended a difficult season with an impressive 7-0 victory over winless Providence Country Day in a Division III contest at Slater Park.

Tolman (2-12 Division III) received victories from singles players Victoria Chmielinsk­i, Gina Carpenter, Delaney Sweeney and Allisa Dantzler. The No. 1 doubles team of Mia Davila and Charlize Lopez didn’t lose a game in their victory.
