LINCOLN — The Lincoln field hockey team continues to close the gap on the two private schools in front of them in the Division II standings.

After dropping an overtime decision to first-place Wheeler last week, the Lions had a chance to prove themselves against second-place Lincoln School Thursday night at a cold, windy Ferguson Field.

Thanks to a goal from forward Lauren Rose in the opening minute, the Lions grabbed the lead, but the rest of the game was spent in Lincoln goalie Edessa Shabo’s circle. The Lincoln senior repelled wave after wave of attacks, but Lincoln School leading scorer Addie deFeo tied the game at 42:18 and Rachael Romain earn the visitors a 2-1 victory with a goal 5:17 into overtime.

Lincoln (6-3-2 Division

II) now knows it can do no better than the No. 3 seed in the playoffs and that will be decided in the penultimate game of the regular season against fourth-place South Kingstown. Lincoln School (10-2 Division II) needs Wheeler to lose another game to have a shot at the No. 1 seed.

The Lions, who were coming off two straight blowout victories, needed just 49 seconds to put a shot past junior goalie Ella Glucksman. Rose found space in the Lynx’ circle to score on one of her team’s few attacking opportunities. coln only had three penalty ners, while the Lynx had 18.

Lincoln School’s best chance in the first half came off the stick of Ana Belliveau, but Shabo raced off her goal line to deny the sophomore. The visitor’s continuous pressure finally paid off at 42:18 when deFeo netted her team-leading 19th goal of the season.

Shabo earned her team a point by denying scoring chances from deFeo and Sam Bennett in the final Lincor15 minutes of regulation.

Lincoln School thought it won the game at 64 minutes when Romain scored, but her shot came from outside of the circle. Just a minute later, the senior scored the game-winning goal.

Lincoln finishes the season with three road games, starting with Monday’s short trip down Route 116 to face Smithfield.
