BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

March 6

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1959 Central Falls veteran mentor Omer Landry will start

Ed Arage, flashy Bill Nicynski, Chick Silva, Ed Anderson and guard Joe Pinto as the Class B Warriors take on defending champion Class A Westerly in the semifinals of the state schoolboy basketball tournament at URI Keaney Gymnasium. Pinto, a tourney tested veteran though only a junior, contributed 10 points and outrebounded a taller La Salle quintet in the quarters. He ruined Rogers in the quarterfinals a year ago and played well in a losing 1958 semi against Westerly. Sophomore Allie Lachance will be the No. 1 reserve, ready for any and all emergencies that should arise.

1969 Charlie Moreau scored only one basket but it pro

vided the deciding points as Corning Glass upset defending champion BVE 53-52 to capture the 1969 Industrial Basketball League crown on the Pawtucket Boys’ Club court. Gerry Gaudreau, with 22 points, paced the Corning attack and Pete Rawlings chipped in with 18, while Alan Addison and Mike Reeder tallied 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the Electricmen. In other PBC action, Gerry Blunt (19 points), Stan Traverse (18), Bob Thibodeau (18) and Paul Thibodeau (14) proved too much as Penn TV continued its amazing play in the Senior Alumni League by downing defending champion Stanton Post of Central Falls 73-63 in the first of a best-ofthree playoff series.

1999 Lyndita Liburd of Central Falls is the leader of the

Times Area schoolgirl scoring race with an average of 19.8 points per game. Rounding out the top five scorers are Attleboro’s Sara Wright and Jenn Rado of Tolman, who are tied for second with 19.1 ppg., Seekonk’s Shannon Halpin is fourth at 16.3 and in fifth is Erica Paiva of Saint Raphael Academy with a 15.8 mark. Carmen Pizarro of Central Falls is the three-point leader with 45 treys, Shea’s Brandy Allen has the single-game high of 45 points and Jackie Fournier of SRA is the pacesetter at the charity stripe with a 77.5% (7192) efficiency.
