1956 Coach Charlie Marques’ Bailey’s Spa and P. A. Vets,

under manager Bob Paquette, lead the Intercity Softball League’s American and National Divisions, respectively. Bobby Lefaivre has rapped out 12 hits in 19 at bats for a .631 mark, and Joe Dragon, who has a seven-game hitting streak going and a .550 batting average, are the key players for Vets. Dick Trahan (.560) has been the sparkplug for Bailey’s who are feeling the loss of first baseman John McBurney, out with a broken leg, while Herb Elderkin (.523), Ray Lague (.478) and Marques (.600) are also hitting well.

1966 Pitcher Rene Demers scored the winning run on Roger Pincince’s two-out double in the top of the eighth inning as Woonsocket (12-1) clinched the Northern Division championship and a berth in the state playoffs by nipping Cumberland 5-4 in extra sessions at Valley Falls. Demers, a slim right-hander, held the Clippers to six hits, struck out 10, walked two and rapped two hits, while sophomore Brad Dean yielded 10 hits, fanned six and allowed five free passes. Cumberland bunched all its runs in the fifth inning when Mike Dufort and Mike O’Connor singled, Dean walked and Kevin 1976 Kenyon clouted a grand slam, a high drive that easily

cleared the fence and nearly hit Bernard F. Norton elementary school on the fly.

Pawtucket West’s Manny Marshall and Kevin Mulcahey of Tolman were triple winners, but Saint Raphael Academy’s superior depth led the Saints to the Pawtucket city outdoor track championship. Marshall was victorious in the 100-yard dash (11.0), 220 and low hurdles (22.0), while Mulcahey notched wins in the long jump (18-6), triple jump (39-4) and high hurdles (16.8). SRA victors were Marc Furtado in the javelin (150-2) and the discus (136-6), Keith Gentes, shot put (47-9) and hammer, John Gorman, two mile (10:10.3) Steve Cadden, pole vault (10-6), Paul Rynasiewicz, mile (4:32.7) and Bill Clark in the 880.
