1949 Boxing Dave Monterio and Rocky Lavigueor, both

representi­ng the Notre Dame A. C. of Central Falls, came through with flying colors in the amateur boxing tournament at the Norwood Sports Arena. Monterio, fighting in the 133-pound class, stopped Joe Majkut in the first round of the semifinals and then chilled Jimmy Matos in the opening round of the final. Lavigueor, competing in the 118-pound division, TKO’d Tony Scott in the second round and scored another second round TKO over Johnny O’Brien for the title.

1949 Men’s Golf Bill Carney and Henry Chernick, both

of the Pawtucket Golf Club, were among the prize winners in the RIGA Invitation golf tournament at the Rhode Island Country Club. Carney topped the Class B competitio­n with 80-12-68, good for low gross and low net, while Chernick topped the Class C division gross award with 85-17-67. Scores of other PGC golfers were Ralph Carlson 87-13-74; Bob Mulligan 87-13-74, George Wilson 88-18-70; E. L. Freeman 95-19-76; Everitt Taylor 103-24-79; Leon McKenzie 100-18-82 and F. R. Marquis 107-17-90.

1949 New England Baseball League Ray Fletcher, Bob

Barbeau and Bobby Heavern combined for seven hits, six RBI and three runs to pace the Pawtucket Slaters to a 6-2 win over the Portland Pilots before a crowd of 2,300 at McCoy Stadium to remain atop the NEBL with a 47-21 record, good for a .691 mark. Fletcher led the locals with a three-run triple, two singles and one run, Barbeau laced an RBI double, singled and scored twice, Heavern laced a two-run double and a single and Bob Montag singled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Ralph Albers (9-1), a frail 19-year-old lefty from New Jersey, yielded six singles, walked eight and fanned eight for the complete-game win, while losing pitcher Francis “Whiffer” Healy, a Pawtucket lad, allowed 10 hits, struck out four and issued two free tickets.
