Cumberland man charged in seven sexual assaults

-

BOSTON (AP) — A Cumberland man already charged with posing as a ride share driver and raping a woman he abducted from outside a Boston bar now faces charges of sexually assaulting seven other women in what prosecutors called a “chillingly similar” manner, authorities say.

Alvin Campbell, 39, who’s being held on $250,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a charge of raping the woman he picked up on Dec. 7, now faces criminal complaints in three city courts for multiple charges of rape, kidnapping and recording a nude person without consent, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said Thursday.

No arraignment dates for the new charges have been scheduled.

Campbell, of Cumberland, targeted victims in bars and other places “where intoxication had made them incapable of consenting or resisting,” prosecutors allege. The women thought they were with the ride-share driver they had called, according to authorities.

“The attacks on these women are the acts of a predator,” Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins said in a statement. “Women are entitled to go out and enjoy themselves without the fear of being preyed upon, kidnapped or raped.”

Campbell’s lawyer, James Coviello, told The Boston Globe via email that his client “unequivocally” denies all the allegations.

Campbell is the brother of Boston City Councilor Andrea Campbell. She said in a statement she is praying for the victims and hopes justice will be served.
