WOONSOCKET - A man was treated at Landmark Medical Center Sunday after he was slashed by another with a box cutter, police say.

Brent E. Grayson, 31, of 27 Gaulin Ave., was treated for an abdominal wound, but he and the man who allegedly caused it, Eduardo Delavega, 50, of 132 Cass Ave., were both charged with disorderly conduct.

The two men got in a fight on the street in front of Delavega's home about 2 40 a.m., police say. Grayson told police it began as he was returning from Providence with his aunt, a woman Delavega has apparently been dating.

When he pulled up in front of the house, Grayson told police, he found Delavega waiting on the porch. 7he two exchanged words and a physical argument ensued.

Grayson said he never saw Delavega wielding a weapon and didn't feel the cut. He didn't realize he was wounded until he looked down at his shirt and saw the blood.

Delavega had a box cutter in his possession that was seized by the police. Though he didn't admit using it, a witness saw him do so, police say.

Police got a blow-by-blow description of the fight from the witness, who told them

Grayson accidentally punched a woman who got between him and Delavega.

Grayson, the witness told police, punched Delavega “multiple times” until Delavega was able to back away and put some space between himself and Grayson.

Delavega then told Grayson to “back off or he would stab him,” Officer Logan Courtemanche said in his account of the incident. That's when Grayson went after Delevega again and Delavega swung the blade at him, cutting him in the abdomen. Grayson then chased Delevaga around a parked car until Delevega managed to run away.

Grayson was already at Landmark by the time police arrived. ,nterviewed at his hospital bed, he told police he'd been driven there by his cousin.

After euestioning both men, police were dissuaded against charging Delavega with a felony armed assault as opposed to the less serious misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Both admitted to being willing combatants and neither wanted to file a complaint. And Delavega insisted he acted in self defense.

Grayson was released from the hospital after being treated and was transferred to the custody of police, who brought him to headquarters for booking.
