1954 Bobby Allen of Pawtucket, twice
R. I. Amateur champion and once Open titlist, shot a competitive nine-hole record of 31, five strokes under par, while playing in the Fram Corporation Golf League at the Locust Valley course in Attleboro. A 31 had been fired previously by Bill Bobel, another Pawtucket golfer, but in a non-competitive match. In other golf news, Harold Gill, who got off a bad drive, holed out a No. 4 wood shot from 185 yards for an eagle on the par four, fourth hole in a Pawtucket Golf Club Twilight League match.
1964 Greg Caffrey of New York Lace
Store’s league champions captured the batting crown in the Darlington American Little League with a .623 mark while also setting a strikeout record of 141 and belting seven homers. Rounding out the top five hitters are John LaSalle of Tom’s Shamrocks (.609), NYLS’s Joe Gamba (.521), Wayne Perry of F.O.P. (.510) and McCoy Oilers’ Scott McConaghy (.447). Perry took home run honors with eight round-trippers, just missing the league record of nine held jointly by Ted Dolan and Vic Ventura.
1974 Art Mitsmenn slugged a three-run
homer over the left field fence in the top of the 10th inning to lead Rynne’s to a dramatic 4-1 win over Golden Top Liquors in the first game of their best-of-three series for the Pawtucket Recreation Softball League championship. Mitsmenn’s blow was set up by Rick Roussesau’s triple and an intentional walk to Gary Rocha. Rousseau rapped three hits to lead his team, while Larry Peloquin banged out three hits in a losing effort.
