1954 Pvt. John McMullen of Pawtucket, winner of the R. I. decathlon championships in 1951 and 1952, captured the XVI Corps triathlon crown recently at Sendai, Japan, where he is stationed with the Eighth Cavalry regiment of the First Cavalry Division. The triathlon comprises a 200-meter swim, a 3,000-meter run and a .45 caliber pistol shoot 20 times at 25 yards. The Pawtucket man, who graduated from Saint Raphael Academy and Providence College, rolled up 1,953 points to 1,924 for his closest competitor. McMullen’s performance qualified him for the all-Japan competition currently in progress at Yokohama.
1964 Glen Tomkiewicz tossed a six-hitter and fanned 11 as Le Foyer whipped the Pawtucket Lions 9-5 in the opening game of the Joe Glenn Pawtucket Pony League round-robin tournament. Norm Cote paced the winners with three hits. RBI singles by Greg Murphy and Terry Hanaway led the Lions at the plate, while losing pitcher Tom Tetrault allowed nine hits and whiffed eight.
1974 Five errors in the first two innings proved to be the downfall for the R. I. Little League champion Darlington Nationals as they dropped a 2-1 verdict to Lindenhurst, N.J. in the Eastern Regional Little League tourney opener. DNLL scored its lone tally in the fifth when Joe Paulhus reached on a fielder’s choice, went to second as Russ Dion walked and scored on Mark Feeley’s line single to centerfield. The hit was the only one of the night for the locals off lefthander Craig Williams.
