1964 Joanne Swanson of Pawtucket won the R. I. State Open women’s singles tennis championship at the Brown University tennis courts beating Mrs. Mary Richards, 6-1, 6-2. Miss Swanson went through the singles tournament without losing a set. In the women’s doubles championship match, Miss Swanson and Mrs. Richards defeated Helen Rich and Amy Johnson, 6-2, 6-0.

1974 Susan Santucci, a 13-year-old pupil at the Lincoln Middle School, rallied in the last six holes to take the R.I.W.G.A. Junior Championship at Potowomut Country Club edging 18-year-old Michele Del Re of Metacomet, 2 and 1. The lead changed several times through the first dozen holes, but Susan took the lead for keeps in the close match as she parred the 13th and then iced everything with a birdie on the 15th hole. Her lead was cut to one as Michele holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the 16th, but the match ended when Del Re landed in a trap guarding the 17th green and took a seven to Santucci’s five.
