1964 Dave Zaborski spun a five-hitter to edge Don Carter

who yielded four hits and struck out 10 as the Darlington Mets nipped the Darlington Sluggers in a Pawtucket Boys’ Club-Pawtucket Recreation Department Pee Wee A Baseball League playoff tilt. The only run of the game came in the fourth inning on a walk to Greg Caffrey and singles by Joe MarcAurele and Frank Doheny. In the other “A” semifinal, Glen Tomkiewicz hurled a two-hitter while Bill Sullivan clouted a two-run homer and Ron Campanelli a solo blast to pace the Nine Aces to a 9-3 romp over the Hustling Nine. 1984 Norm Belliveau capped an undefeated season by

winning the Pawtucket Tennis League’s singles tournament in a hard-fought finale over Dave Izzo, 9-7, on the Slater Park courts. Izzo was the big surprise of the tourney, upsetting two seeded players - Jim White and John Alberti – before falling to Belliveau’s topspin bullets. The 26-year-old champion, rarely showing any emotion, showed few weaknesses as he surged to a 7-4 lead before holding off the hustling 36-year-old Izzo.

1994 John Picozzi of Lincoln led the Salve Regina University men’s tennis team to its third Commonwealth Coast Conference championship in four years. Picozzi, who started at number-four singles and eventually climbed to No. 3, finished with a 10-6 singles record and in doubles, a 5-2 mark. Picozzi completed the season first in total match points (8.5) and was named as the team’s most valuable player.
