BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

September 8

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1960 Coach Win Dodge’s Pawtucket West eleven officially gets the Pawtucket schoolboy football season under way when it tackles highly regarded Woonsocket coached by Pawtucket’s Jack McKinnon. The Rangers’ offensive wall starts ends Ronnie Max and Gus Coelho, tackles Dave Mathieson and Paul Brandley, the heftiest lineman at 195 pounds, guards Steve Domenico and Bill Nesbitt and center Doug Arnold. The backfield has 1959 All Class B Henry Levin at fullback and halfbacks Kevin Shackett and John Hulme, while the QB is still undecided between Ted Kacharo and Leo Paquette, both woefully short on experience.

1970 Coach Tom Crowe’s Saint Raphael Academy eleven opposes Hope High in a Class B East affair to open the season at Conley Stadium. The offensive wall starts veteran Eddie Quinn and Joe Arruda at the ends, Joe Bradshaw and Fred Nunes at the tackles, Terry Denelle and Tom Ross at the guards and three-year starter Charley O’Malley at center with Kevin Donahue, Don Larence and Ted Ferland also seeing action. Dennis Hanson will call the signals at QB, Terry Tracey and Gary O’Brien will open at the halfback slots with burly George Morrison at fullback while Chuck Dubuc and Bill Mulholland will be available for duty at halfback.

1980 Option quarterback Scott Haggerty, who will be moved to halfback, and the offensive line are the only bright spots, otherwise there is a lot of inexperience on the Tolman football team this year. The interior offensive wall has Jeff Brule and either Ken Brierly or Harry Crombie at the tackles, Mike Brindamour and Doug Mailhot at the guards and Keith Dion at center. Dave Sinotte has the nod at QB, Bill Quinn has the inside track at fullback and the scramble for a starting role beside Haggerty includes Rick Lagasse along with sophomores Kevin McKnight and Brian Maloney.
