BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES September 14

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1960 Fullback John Pappas was the big gun for the Dar

lington Braves with a pair of touchdowns and a conversion as the local eleven trounced the defending champion East Providence Mohawks 26-0 at McCoy Stadium to open the sixth season of the R. I. Pre-Teen Football League. Pappas, a hard runner, raced 55 and 33 yards on end sweeps for his TD’s, while Allan Addison tallied on a 25-yard end run and then rushed the PAT. Defensive standouts for coach Norm Roy’s Braves were Jeff Reinsant, Dave Poyton, and Dave Beauvien.

1970 Coach Tom Crowe’s young and inexperienced Saint

Raphael Academy football team opened its season with a satisfying 21-12 triumph over Hope in a Class B East Division tilt. QB Dennis Hanson engineered a first quarter sustained march for the Saints’ first touchdown and capped the drive with a one-yard sneak for the score with Pete Troy adding the PAT boot. Fullback George Morrison tallied on a three-yard run and Terry Tracey on a five-yard scamper for the other SRA TDs, while Tracey also rushed for a two-point conversion.

1980 Coach Jim Deffley’s Cumberland eleven blanked

Lincoln 13-0 in the annual Injury Fund scrimmage between the two Valley rivals. With four minutes remaining in the second quarter, three big plays set up Ray Mazzone’s one-yard touchdown burst: a 15-yard pass from QB Steve Cross to Steve Lefebvre, a 23-yard jaunt by Steve Thorpe and a 21-yard aerial from Cross to Dave Newsome. After the Lions went nowhere after the ensuing kickoff, Newsome took an option pitchout from Thorpe, circled right end and bolted 66 yards for the clincher.
