BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES December 5

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1951 Saint Raphael Academy basketball coach Bob Con

don has three seniors returning in 6-foot-6 center Larry Emidy, who is expected to be the Saints’ top scorer and rebounder, 5-7 playmaker Roy Guarino and 6-2 forward Jim “Dizzy” Heatherton, a terrific shooter from any angle. Along with these veterans, Condon has Roger Marcil, Joe Dragon, Bob Marshall, Joe Falvey and George Knowles, all up from the junior varsity team that lost only one game, with Dragon and Marshall as the top candidates for the other two starting positions. Jim O’Brien, a 6-3 transfer student from Woonsocket, is slated to see much service backing up Emidy at center.

1961 Cumberland’s rookie head hoop coach, 26-year-old

Joe Dragon, inherits last season’s five starters from departing Andy Tucker, who coached the sport there before Dragon was even born. The returning five begins with 1960 All-Valley choice Mike Aragao, a frail 5-foot-10, 135-pound southpaw who led the area in scoring with a 23.9 average, 6-2 Ron Clement (12.4), 5-7 playmaker Walt Dusza (10.8), 5-11 Joe Marshall (7.6) and 5-10 twins, Newman and Norman Carr, who took turns as the fifth starter. 5-10 Tolman transfer Bill Colvin will battle with the twins for the fifth position.

1971 Coach Joe Hughes’ Cumberland quintet this season

will be bolstered by veteran starters Kevin Coleman and 6-foot-4 Steve Lukasiewicz along with varsity lettermen Joel McKee and Steve Pincince, all seniors. Hughes is looking for help from first-year player 6-2 senior Fred Patras, David Goodreau and Barry Morgan, a pair of seniors, junior varsity graduates Andy Bryant, Alan Marshall, Milton Malachowski, Kevin Skwirz and Kevin Connors, all juniors, and sophomore Ernie Abbott. “We hope to be more of a running club than we have been because of our overall rebounding ability,” said Hughes.
