BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

January 8 1963

For a couple of supposed invalids, Tom Smile (bad back) and Don Suggs (sprained ankle) certainly looked mighty healthy in leading Tolman to a 71-54 triumph over De La Salle before another packed house of 700 at the Tigers’ gym. Smile, a 6-foot-2 senior, hit from all angles en route to a game-high 30 points, while 6-6 Suggs, who failed to hit double digits for the first time in his schoolboy career with nine points, dominated the boards and many of Smile’s hoops came from fine passes by Suggs. Jim Squadrito notched 13 points and Frank Geiselman 12 for coach Ted McConnon whose quintet now is riding a seven-game winning streak.

Tolman’s swimming team received an able boost from its three female members, Roberta Fortin, Liz Mulcahey and Roxanne Smith, and defeated Pawtucket West 56-37 in the Interscholastic League’s opening dual meet of the season at the Rangers’ pool. Fortin swam the opening leg in the victorious 160-yard medley relay, Mulcahey gained second-place points in the diving competition and Smith, the third member of the trio of sophomore distaffers, took third in the 160-yard individual medley event. Nanci Ginish was one of two double winners for West capturing the 160 individual medley in 1:58.5 and the 100 butterfly clocking a 1:11.3 time.

It took seven years but coach Serge Boudreault’s Cumberland hockey team finally rid itself of the albatross that has been hanging around its neck by stopping its nemesis, Lincoln, 4-2 with solid forechecking and excellent goaltending from Ken Pope in a Met B Division game. The Clippers received goals from Kevin Morrissey, Dan Coleman, Tim Murray and an empty-net tally by Paul Langton. Greg Polak tallied both goals for Lions’ coach John Rekos who pointed to the lack of defensive coverage as a key to the loss.
