Coach Omer Landry’s Class B champion Central

Falls quintet dominated the rebounding and took advantage of their free throws, hitting on 24 of 33 tries, en route to a 54-46 victory over Cranston High to move into the semifinal round of the R. I. Interscholastic League basketball tournament at URI’s Keaney Gym. Big Joe Hughes stole the show for the Bluejackets pouring 28 points through the hoop, 14 of them from the charity stripe. Coach Ted McConnon, playing only an iron-man five, had his Tolman Tigers reign supreme as the Exchange Streeters edged East Providence 57-54 before 3,300 screaming fans at PC’s Alumni Hall to capture the state crown and extend their unbeaten streak to 23 games. Don Suggs, the tourney’s MVP, tallied a game-high 17 points, Frank Geiselman caged 13 and Gerry Suggs canned 12, while the remaining iron-men, Jim Squadrito and Eddie DaCruz, had eight and seven points, respectively. It was Tolman’s first cage crown since 1946 and McConnon’s second, as he directed his alma mater, Saint Raphael Academy, to the title in 1943.
