BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES March 19

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1964 Nine Blackstone Valley schoolboys have surpassed

the coveted 1,000-point mark in their high school careers led by Roland Benoit, the former Sacred Heart Academy sharpshooter, who leads all scorers with 1,479 points (18.3 ppg). The following are the other members of the 1,000 Point Club: Jim McNaught of Central Falls 1,385 (21.3), Tolman’s Don Suggs 1,343 (18.9), Vic Fontaine of SHA 1,266 (14.0), Cumberland’s Mike Aragao 1,264 (21.0), Joe Hughes of CF 1,219 (19.4) and Leo Heroux 1,203 (12.8), Dick Rouleau 1,094 (18.2) and Ed Heroux 1,050 (11.9), all from SHA. Benoit, Fontaine, Eddie Heroux and Leo Heroux all had four-year schoolboy careers.

1984 Defensive standout Jimmy Dunbar turned scorer in

the late going and carried Holy Trinity of Central Falls to the R. I. CYO Grammar Division state crown. Holy Trinity got its last six points from Dunbar and erased a threepoint deficit in the final minute to defeat St. Ann’s of Providence 43-40. Dunbar finished with 13 points and Poochie Nunez and Jeff Desautell netted 12 apiece for the champs. In the semifinal contest, Nunez’ buzzer-beating shot was the margin of victory in a 43-42 win over St. Augustine’s of Providence.

1994 Anne Shaughnessy, who has moved up from assistant

to head coach of the Lincoln girls’ volleyball team, has a strong core of four-year players returning in middle hitter Laura Landry and outside hitters Jaime Drescher and Birgit Claus. Junior Alicia DiRobbio started last year as a setter but is being pushed by freshman Margaret Landry, while junior Missy Wright will make a bid for the middle hitter slot. Nancy Brillon, a junior, should see action at outside hitter and senior Jenni-Lee Melanson will be a strong server.
