BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES March 20

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1964 Billy Nicynski and Ron Clement, two former Blackstone Valley schoolboy standouts, helped put the Rhode Island College basketball team into the semifinals of the New England State College Athletic Conference playoffs as RIC drubbed Worcester State 92-73. Nicynski, a star at Central Falls, led the scoring with 23 points and played an excellent floor game. Clement, a rugged 6-foot-4 ex-Cumberland great, grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and chipped in with 15 points.

1984 A wiry, pixie-like dance for her floor exercises and a half-on full-off vaulting maneuver gave one of the meet’s smallest gymnasts an all-around score of 63.4 points and a spot in the regionals during last weekend’s U. S. G. F. Class I and II state championships at CCRI. Eleven-year-old Stacy Bourassa of Pawtucket and R. I. Gymnastics Village took firsts in three out of four events – uneven bars (15.5), floor exercises (16.95) and vault (17.2). Bourassa competed in Class II (intermediate) for the first time this year.

1994 Tolman girls’ volleyball coach Rick Emerson, who has Monica Williams and Kerri Derosier returning in the setter slots, expects his team to improve on a 2-17 Class A-North campaign by moving into Class B-North this year. Senior Allison Gugel will be the backcourt passer, junior Jen Gruslin can play both front and backcourt, Christy Bailey will be in the front row and Jen Durand could see some action at setter. Emerson sees promise in new players Jill Noiseux, Lyndsey Botello and Lori Moss.
