1964 Three baskets by Don Shorten in overtime enabled

St. George’s to edge Woodlawn Baptist 57-55 allowing the winners to keep pace with St. Martin’s atop the Junior Church Basketball League at the Pawtucket YMCA with records of 14-1. Shorten ended up with a game-high 24 points and Steve Bullock added 22, while Joe Larson and Stuart Jensen hooped 22 points each for the Baptists. In other action, Dave Howe canned 21 points as St. Martin’s defeated Darlington Congregati­onal 77-67 despite Bill Janowski torching the twines for 32 points in a losing cause.

1984 Frank Geiselman, coach of Cumberland and longtime president of the R. I. High School Girls’ Basketball Coaches Associatio­n, received a special award from his colleagues for his service to the group at the annual All-State banquet. Players from the Times’ Area honored at the affair were as follows: Roxanne LaBrosse, Cumberland, All-State and All-Class A; Lori Poulin, Tolman, All-Class A: and Melissa Talbot, Shea, All-Class B.

returns seniors Michaela Masi, Sara Pelletier, Amy Pratte and Deanna Law who will make up the crux of the team. Juniors Sheila Bogan and Chris Sullivan, along with sophomore Meredith Vachon, are competing for two setter positions, while Jess Boudjouk, third-year player Sabrina Taylor and fourthyear player Karen Brennan will see some time at the hitter slots. Newcomers Rhea Roberti and Liz Janusz have made good progress and could use their height to the Clippers’ advantage.
