1950

Eleven new boxing champions were crowned at the Pawtucket Boys’ Club last night in the finals of the annual event for boys from 45 to 142 pounds. Little Ernie Roach, winner over Calvin Bray for the 50-pound title, was voted the outstandin­g boxer of the night with three of the seven votes cast, while Louis Mello, Jim Kiley, Billy Lagor and Larry Sayegh each received one vote. Sayegh and Bill Simpson staged the liveliest scrap of the night, with Larry getting the decision after three action-packed rounds. Al Bailey, manager of Charlie Anglee, served as referee; Danny Fox was timekeeper, and William Pappas and Jack Scott were the judges.

1960

Bob Paradise, Bill Masuck and Bud Falvey paced Tolman to a 98-52 victory over Pawtucket West in an indoor track meet at the Pawtucket YMCA. Paradise won three events, Masuck two and shared firsts in two others and Falvey copped two for the Tigers. Dennis Lavern was the Ranger standout with two firsts and two first place ties. Tolman’s Dick Testa set a record in winning the 12-pount shot put with a 44-6 toss.

1970

Gary O’Brien singled, stole second and raced home on two successive Lincoln errors in the bottom of the seventh inning to pace Saint Raphael Academy to a 6-5 win over the Lions in the opening game of the Metro Division campaign for both teams. Winning pitcher John LaSalle yielded nine hits, walked seven and fanned five. Ed Quinn, Tom Olivo, Steve Pertuso and LaSalle had the other hits for the Saints. Bob Nikodem was the batting star of the day going three-for-three while Moe Omar and Rich Elderkin chipped in with two hits apiece for Lincoln.
