WOONSOCKET – Santa Claus came barreling down the chimney a few days early for Alexander Gasbarro and the Mount St. Charles basketball team.

A senior captain, Gasbarro poured in a career-high 24 points and added seven rebounds and three assists – he also drilled two 3-pointers – as the Mounties raced to a 55-37 victory over Juanita Sanchez in Division III action Tuesday night. Sitting on nine points heading into the second half, Gasbarro helped break the game wide open when he scored his team’s first seven points to start the third quarter.

From pushing the ball in transition to flashing his ability to connect from mid-range and long-distance, Gasbarro, per MSC head coach Henry Coleman, “did a little bit of everything” for a Mountie squad that will carry a 2-1 record in league play heading into the new year.

The tide started to turn in MSC’s favor during the second quarter, one that saw the Cavaliers score just four points and head into halftime down 30-14. Senior Nathan Kilburn helped MSC’s cause with eight points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks. Senior captain Nate Tessier added eight points, 10 rebounds, and four steals and had a perfect showing at the free-throw line (4-of-4).

“The kids came out determined and focused. It was a total team win,” said Coleman.

Mount returns to action on Dec. 28 against Rogers as part of a holiday tournament that will take place at Barrington High School.

Pride still perfect in D-III

CUMBERLAND – Paul Cuffee’s Luis Henderson may have been a major thorn in Blackstone Valley Prep’s side on Tuesday night, yet the Pride rode the 1-2 punch of seniors Chris Rodriguez and Xavier Lora to score a 65-55 win in Division III action. Lara led BVP (3-0) with 22 points while Rodriguez

pumped in 21 points.

Ethan Sou added 10 points for BVP, which led 27-23 at halftime. Henderson led all scorers with 30 points.

Novans fall to Purple

WOONSOCKET – Facing off against one of the state’s top contenders, the Woonsocket High fought and clawed but just didn’t have enough firepower to keep pace with Classical in Division I action Tuesday night.

Classical’s Evenson St. Franc was one of five players on his team to hit for double figures as the Purple scored a 77-48 win over the host Villa Novans. St. Franc finished with a gamehigh 22 points while Azariah Harrison (17 points) and Marquis Buchanan (15 points) had big nights for Classical.

Now 0-2 in league play, Woonsocket received 17 points on two 3-pointers from junior Justin Hill while senior Shane Perrico made three triples for 15 points.
