Rivera keeps Sholman unbeaten

-

EXETER – In a back-andforth game that went down to the final seconds, it was the Shea/Tolman Co-op prevailing by a 44-43 count over Exeter/West Greenwich in Division III girls’ basketball action Wednesday night.

Down two with eight seconds remaining, Sholman received a three-point opportunity from sophomore guard Armani Rivera with one second on the clock. Rivera followed up her own miss at the rim and was fouled.

Waving off the need for a timeout, Rivera made the free throw to break the deadlock. She finished with 27 points and five steals. Abryanna Encarnacion

came up with timely rebounds down the stretch and supplied two ket baskets for Tolman, now 5-0 (3-0 in league play).

NOVANS FALL TO 1-2

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Woonsocket girls basketball team hung with a bigger, stronger East Providence squad for a half, but foul trouble eventually caught up to the Novans in a 63-40 Division II road defeat Wednesday night.

Woonsocket (1-2 Division II) only trailed by seven points at halftime, but the Townies took advantage of the Novans’ lack of depth over the final two quarters. Kelanice Delgado led the visitors with 12 points, while Bella Mencarini added 11.

“We matched their intensity in the first half and we had a few opportunities in transition, but we missed some easy chances,” Woonsocket coach Dan Belisle said. “We proved we could play with them, but we just ran into foul trouble.”

The Novans step away from league play next week, as they play Division I Ponaganset at Smithfield High on Monday and then Division III Burrillville the following day at East Greenwich High.
