WOONSOCKET – A Providence man was remanded to the state prison Monday after police charged him with choking his girlfriend – and other offenses.

David Perry, 29, of 1 Cadillac Drive, was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions as a probation violator on two previous convictions, one involving a 2020 Pawtucket police charge of domestic assault and another for driving off a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, originating out of Cranston, the judiciary’s website says.

Police arrested Perry on Friday afternoon after responding to a report of a domestic assault at 663 Bernon St. Officers said they were flagged down nearby by a 32-year-old woman who appeared to be “in a state of emotional distress.”

The woman told officers that she and Perry had just been involved in an argument over his control of her cell phone. During the feud, she said, Perry had spit in her face and mouth as his son and another child in the house watched.

A few days earlier, the woman told police, she and Perry had been involved in another altercation during which he had allegedly choked her to the point where she was unable to breath.

She told an officer “she’d not reported this incident because she was aware that she and David have an active no contact order, of which she is the protected party, and she did not want to get him in trouble.”

Officers detained Perry as he was walking on Bernon Street, not far from the victim’s apartment. At that time, Perry allegedly misidentified himself, giving police a false name and date of birth. Perry, who was accompanied by an

other male, denied knowing anything about the quarrel; he and his friend told police they were merely on their way to a convenience store to pick up some snacks.

Patrolman Nicholas Maglio reported that police took Perry into custody after dispatch provided officers with a photo of the alleged assailant.

The police ended up charging Perry with five counts – domestic assault by strangulation, a felony; domestic simple assault; violation of a no-contact order; domestic disorderly conduct; and – for allegedly lying about his identity – obstructing police.

After being held overnight at police headquarters, Perry was released to the ACI pending an appearance in Sixth District Court on Monday.
