1950 Jackie Weber of Pawtucket, former New England

lightweigh­t champion, scored a decisive victory over Fall River’s Gene LeBlanc in the main bout of the season’s first boxing show at Ocean State Park before a paid crowd of 635. Weber tallied a knockdown in the first round and was then content to outbox his rival the remainder of the fight. The Pawtucket scrapper, who weighed in at 135 pounds, carried every round.

1960 The Pawtucket Little League has chosen 14 players

to represent the league in the all-star competitio­n under the tutelage of manager John Carroll of the Firefighte­rs and assistant Frank Higgins. The players are as follows: Mike Esolonis, Doug Hartley, Joe Cantone and Bruce Villeneuve of Mal’s Baby Shoppe; Andy Baccari, Don Shorten and Steve Gallo from Albo’s; Rickey Slaney, George Aspinwall, Joe Pardi and Mike Cocci of the Firefighte­rs; and Paul LaRue, Chet Swiatkowsk­i and Dennis Tente of Clifford Motors. Fred Meers of the Firefighte­rs is the alternate.

1970 Norm MacNeil held Penn TV to eight hits as Wood

lawn Vets banged out a total of 19 safeties in a 14-3 Central Falls Community Softball League encounter at Macomber Memorial Stadium. Bill Wheeler launched a threerun homer in the first inning and added a single, Mike Aragao rapped three singles, Newman Carr a triple and single, Norman Carr a double and single, Billy Wheeler a double and single and Jack Coppolino, Joe Yelle and MacNeil two singles apiece for Vets. Bob Casey stroked a leadoff round-tripper in the second for Penn TV.
