Heat wave means keeping cool takes priority

- By Dawn Goff

I don’t think I need to tell anyone that it has been very hot this last week. We do not have central air but I do have portable air conditioners. My house is a bungalow style so I need to hang a sheet on the opening between the kitchen and dining room so the air will stay in the parlor and dining room. It works nicely and keeps the two rooms around 70 degrees which is comfortable for Wendy and me.

Now the car was a different story. On the first day of the heat wave my air conditioner in the car broke down. The passenger side vents were blowing cold air but the drivers side blew hot air. It was ok for me but not for Wendy. We had to cancel two of her visits this week.

Thankfully Friday, Dorman’s Auto Body was able to get a new switch that day and fixed the air right away. Saturday, I went out to go to a family cookout and the car was making a low grinding noise. Dorman’s will get it on

Monday and hopefully it will only be a minor thing and will get fixed on that day.

I did manage to get in one event this week. Cousin Sheila had called to let me know that on Thursday, there was going to be a free concert at Palagi’s Ice Cream store at 55 Bacon St. A group of our friends and family members were all going. This week it was Rodney Brunelle as Counterfeit Cash with his Tribute to Johnny Cash.

Over the years I’ve seen many Elvis impersonators but this is the first time I’ve seen a Johnny Cash one. Rodney, sang all of Johnny’s greatest hits. With the hot weather his “Ring of Fire” fit perfect. If you closed your eyes, you would think it was Johnny himself singing.

When we first got there, we found a shady area out of the direct sun but once the sun went down there was just a slight breeze which made it comfortable. The delicious ice cream Sunday that we got at the ice cream store helped to keep us all cool.

I hope the car gets fixed quickly, this week there are a few things going on that I hope to get to. The biggest being the Pawtucket’s Dog Park DogaPalozza on July 30 & 31. Held in Slater Park the two-day festival will have food trucks, lots of vendors, doggie contests, adult cooking contests, and bands. If it’s not too hot Wendy might do the costume contests, will have to see about that.

Have a great week and if you see us around be sure to say Hi!
