BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

1951 Middleweight Charlie Anglee of Pawtucket gave a highly impressive performance as he battered George (Tiger) Roberts of Philadelphia through eight rounds en route to a ninth-round TKO in a scheduled 10-round bout before 1,000 fans at the Valley Arena in Holyoke. Roberts had taken so much punishment at the end of the eighth - his face was badly swollen and there was a deep gash inside his lip - his handlers asked that the fight be stopped. In a six-round preliminary bout, Teddy St. Jean of Central Falls won his 11th straight pro bout in scoring a unanimous decision over Danny Falcone of Manchester, Conn.
1961 Jim Dempsey and Ray Dube netted 12 points apiece to lead St. Leo’s to a near- whitewash win, 39-3, over Our Lady of Consolation in a Blackstone Valley CYO Midget Basketball League encounter. In other midget tilts, Russ Gregory poured in 20 points and Bob Vaudreuil canned 16 as Holy Trinity improved to 10-1 in the American Division with a 45-25 rout of St. Mathieu’s. Walt Zamoida swished 16 points but it was not enough as St. Patrick’s Red upset St. Joseph’s of Central Falls 24-20.
1971 Hot-shooting Steve Pincince, starting only his third game of the season, poured in 23 points and sparked Cumberland to a satisfying 85-74 win over Class A East Division rival, Woonsocket. Kevin Coleman swished 18 points, Paul Peloquin hooped 13 and Dave Barone added 10 for coach Joe Hughes’ Clippers. Andy Dowdy shared game-high laurels with 23 points, while Paul Charpentier netted 18, John Gouin 16 and Dan Chattman 14 for the Villa Novans.
