Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition in which the lymph fluid does not drain properly. This can happen when part of the lymph system is damaged or blocked due to radiation therapy, surgery or cancers that block lymph vessels. Lymphedema usually affects an arm or leg but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the neck and head. Swelling usually develops slowly during treatment or years after. Talk to your health care provider as soon as you notice any of the following symptoms:

• Swelling and a heavy or achy feeling in your arms or legs that may spread

to fingers and toes

• Swelling that is soft to the touch and not usually painful at first

• A dent when you press on the swollen area
