PJ Morton brings his solo tour to Nightfall.
Maybe you know him f rom t hat t hree- t i me Grammy- winning pop/ rock band he’s in, but Maroon 5 hasn’t really slowed PJ Morton’s solo career.
Morton has been associated with Maroon 5 since 2010 and took over primary keyboard duties in 2012 when Jesse Carmichael took a two-year sabbatical, making Morton a permanent member of the band. It’s Morton playing on the hit single “Payphone” from the platinum-selling 2012 album, “Overexposed.” He added keyboard and backing vocals for the band’s platinum-selling fifth album, “V,” in 2014.
Maroon 5 bandmates Adam Levine and James Valentine contributed to Morton’s solo EP, “Following My First Mind,” in 2012. Morton released his first full-length album, “New Orleans,” in 2013. In addition to collaborations with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, it featured the Grammy-nominated sin- gle “Only One,” with Stevie Wonder.
That project could be called a dream come true. In interviews, Morton has credited Wonder with channeling his interest in music. Morton is the son of award-winning recording artist Bishop Paul S. Morton, so “music was always big around my family. Everyone sings or plays something,” he told YoungMoneyHQ.com.
But the primary focus was gospel — until Morton heard Wonder.
“Stevie is what connected to me as a musician,” he said. “He made me really want to sing and play songs.”
Morton has already claimed a Gram my Award, though not as a performer. In 2002, he wrote and produced India. Arie’s song “Interested” from her “Voyage to India” album.
In the YoungMoneyHQ.com interview, he described the experience as ”incredible.”
“That was my first big piece of work outside of gospel, so I was really proud of the success the song had,” he said. “I felt like I was really getting into what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
On Friday, July 8, he brings his solo tour to Chattanooga as the headliner for the Nightfall concert series.
