‘Spring Into the New Year’ watercolors on view

- STAFF REPORT

A nonjuried show at the North River Civic Center is giving 20 Chattanooga-based, Region III members of the Tennessee Watercolor Society a chance to showcase their favorite paintings. A People Choice’s ballot box will give the public a chance to vote on which of these favorites they favor.

“Spring Into the New Year” opens Sunday, Jan. 15, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m., featuring specialty hors d’oeuvres supplied by the artists. The show will continue through Friday, March 31.

All the works are executed in water media — watercolors or acrylics on paper or Yupo, professionally presented under glass or Plexiglas with mats and frames.

Among the artists are longtime recognized award-winning painters Harriet Chipley, Sandra Paynter Washburn and Leslie Dulin, all noted for their large, full-sheet pieces.

Also included are Jo Ann Bracey, Helen Burton, Barbara Bye, Mark Cobbe, Amanda Farris, Madeleine Gavin, Marie Spaeder Haas, Robin Howe, Beth Jacobs, Jennie Kirkpatrick, Liz Klinefelter, Geraldine McKay-Seay, Suzanne Nichols, Tom Reddy, Carol Ruocco, Ann Rutledge and Betty Jo Smith. Each artist will show up to three paintings.

The show is marked by versatile techniques — from traditional realism to abstract designs and collages — and a variety of subjects — animal studies, florals, still lifes and scenery. Sale prices range from $150 to more than $1,000, with most in the $200 to $500 range. A percentage of sales will go to the Civic Center.

Votes from the People’s Choice ballot box be counted in March. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers, as well as several honorable mentions.

“Spring into the New Year” may be viewed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
