In-Town’s ‘Art to Hart’ helps fellow artists
Recognizing February as the month of love and giving, In-Town Gallery will devote this month’s exhibition to “Art to Hart” and give its artists, and the public, an opportunity to provide materials for participants in Hart Gallery programs.
The mission of the nonprofit Hart Gallery is to provide homeless individuals and other nontraditional artists an opportunity to create and sell their artwork for their benefit. The gallery also offers classes at other agencies around town that serve low- income seniors, at-risk inner-city youth and others who face physical or mental challenges.
Hart Gallery opened a second facility in Memphis last year. Locally, the agency has expanded to include an art expression class focused on art as a healing process and art classes to relieve job-related stress at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
Gallery owner Ellen Heavilon says the ability to create not only improves the morale but gives participants a deeper sense of purpose. More information on Hart Gallery’s work can be found at www.hartgallerytn.com.
In-Town Gallery artists are donating art supplies to share with Hart Gallery. A donation box will be set up for public donations of creative materials, as will a secure receptacle for cash contributions and gift cards.
A reception for “Art to Hart” is scheduled Friday, Feb. 3. Donations are welcome anytime during the month. Hours are 11 a. m.- 6 p. m. Monday through Saturday (until 8 p.m. on first Fridays) and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
Among the items most needed are acrylic paint in nonprimary colors, acrylic paper, watercolor papers, Sharpies in all colors, paint pens, glue, gesso, Modge Podge, canvasas in all sizes, gel medium, matte and glossy varnish. Checks, cash and gift cards to Art Creations or Hobby Lobby also would be put to use.
