Civil War collectibles, speakers in Dalton this weekend
Collectors will f i nd plenty to peruse as the Chickamauga Civil War Show returns to Dalton, Ga., this weekend.
Produced by Mike Kent and Associates, the event f ills the exhibition hall with more than 400 tables of Civil War weapons and memorabilia from dealers across the country.
Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, and 9 a. m.- 3 p. m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Dalton Convention Center, 2211 Dug Gap Battle Road. Admission is $10, with children under 12 admitted for free.
Meanwhile, the Bandy Heritage Center for North- west Georgia will present its 2017 Civil War in the Western Theater Colloquium from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p. m. Saturday in the lecture hall at the Convention Center. Admission is free.
This year’s theme is “Written in Blood and Carved in Stone: Remembering the Civil War at Chickamauga, Shiloh and Vicksburg.” Three prominent scholars will discuss how the nation’s earliest military parks came into existence, how each contributed to the memory of the war and how their commemoration of the historic l and scape changed over time.
Jim Ogden, chief historian of the Chattanooga and Chickamauga National Military Park, will begin the presentations at 9: 15 a. m. with “Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park.”
At 10 a. m., Dr. Tim Smith of the University of Tennessee at Martin will present “This Great Battlefield of Shiloh.”
Michael Panhorst will follow at 11 a.m. on “Vicksburg National Military Park: The Art Park of the South.”
The lectures will be followed by a discussion panel from 11: 45 a. m. to 12:30 p.m.
