College concerts wrap up end of year

As area colleges and universiti­es wrap up their academic year, several musical ensembles will present their end-of-year concerts this weekend.

Here’s a roundup of where to find opera to orchestras.

CHATTANOOG­A STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

› Tuesday, April 25: Humanities and Fine Arts Department, 4501 Amnicola Highway, 7: 30 p. m., free. For more informatio­n: 423-697-2460. Chatt State Music Department presents a recital of voice students and applied instrument­al study.

COVENANT COLLEGE

› Today, April 20: Dora Maclellan Brown Memorial Chapel, 14049 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, 7 p. m., free. For more informatio­n: 706-419-1189. The Department of Music presents the chamber orchestra’s spring concert under the direction of Lok Kim. Additional­ly, the concert will feature Covenant’s brass choir, flute ensemble and harp duo. “Brahms, Tchaikovsk­y and Dvorak are considered by many to be the best composers f rom their respective countries and the audience will appreciate the difference­s stylistica­lly, harmonical­ly and musically in what they hear,” says Kim.

LEE UNIVERSITY

› Sunday, April 23: Squires Recital Hall, Humanities Center, 1230 Parker St., Cleveland, Tenn., 3 p. m., free. Lee Opera Theatre, directed by James Frost, will perform scenes from wellknown operas such as “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Magic Flute,” “Falstaff,” “Faust,” “La Boheme” and “The Consul.” “Some of the scenes will be in the original language, but there will be translatio­ns to aid in the enjoyment for the audience,” says Frost.

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT CHATTANOOG­A

All performanc­es are free and will be held in the Roland Hayes Hall of the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St.

› Today, April 20: 7:30 p.m., Concert Band. UTC Concert Band Director Craig Davis says 35 musicians will perform in large ensemble, chamber groups, percussion trio, flute quartet, trombone trio, brass trio, clarinet duet and brass quintet.

The Concert Band will play Ernest Caneva’s “Eldorado,” Frank Ticheli’s “Shenandoah” and six movements of Gordon Jacob’s William Byrd Suite.

› Friday, April 21: 7: 30 p. m., Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorale. Men’s Chorus Director Perry Ward says the 10 members of that ensemble have centered their program around a theme of social justice. Numbers range from Joseph Martin’s “Who Are the Brave” to “If I Had a Hammer — A Pete Seeger Tribute,” arranged by Kirby Shaw. The two ensembles will combine for several selections before closing with Irving Berlin’s “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor.”

› Saturday, April 22: 3 p.m., UTC Neo-Baroque Ensemble and Clarinet Studio Recital. Director Nikolasa Tejero says this program will feature members of her studio along with a chamber ensemble that has spent the semester studying, reinventin­g and performing early Baroque music. “We call it Neo-Baroque because we have taken these early works and transcribe­d them for a modern ensemble comprised of flute, clarinet, bassoon, marimba and piano. The program will feature works by Baroque composers Michael Praetorius, Alessandro Demophon, Johann Hasse, Giuseppe Tartini and Georg Philipp Telemann.” Staff pianist Jenny Parker will accompany the soloists.

› Sunday, April 23: 2: 30 p. m., UTC Cadek Orchestra.

The 55- member coll ege and community orchestra will present a program of romantic rhapsodies, directed by Sandy Morris. Selections will include “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2” by Georges Bizet and Symphony No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak. “A beautiful work by Holmberg Professor of American Music Dr. Jonathan McNair, titled ‘ Beachsprin­g’ will be performed,” says Morris. The work is based on the hymn tune of the same name, which will also be performed.
